Students Taught to Think
We
never, never permit guessing at words. Guessing just
deceives the reader into jumping and saying any word
that comes to mind. DLR students become critical thinkers and serious analyzers of complete words in reading context or stories.
Reading Strategy
Intensive Systematic Phonics Strategies,
ISPS, was the only method used in America to teach students to read and spell until around 1925, when the literacy rate was 97%. This method has proven very effective in helping students to sound out new words all by themselves in a short amount of teaching time.
Spelling
Research proves that spelling success is most effective when the Test-Study test method is used. This means children never pre-study or memorize spelling words. They are taught to listen to sounds and write words as they hear the sounds in each syllable. The results are amazingly correct spelling in a short
time.
Students become much better spellers when taught the auditory skills for spelling and using their visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods effectively.
Handwriting Skills
We
insist on readable handwriting. Students will be taught
both manuscript (printing) and cursive letter forms to
improve their penmanship skills. We assist students with
correct pencil holds and other study habits.
Classes According to Age Levels
Students
are taught in comfortable age level groups. Classes are
scheduled after school for one-hour periods twice a week. Classes also are scheduled on Saturday in two hour blocks.
Even though students are working within small groups, each will work individually in his/her own Workbook. Our method is directed instruction using
visual, auditory and kinesthetic styles of learning to help each student succeed.
Requirements
For Success
Students
must be on time to their assigned class. Students are
required to pay on the day of the class. Students with
workbooks must bring them to each class. We must be
notified at least 24 hours in advance when a student is going to be absent. Without advance notice
of absenteeism, a charge of 1/2 of the instruction fee is due
and payable by the next class.
Growth
Proven by Test Scores
Pretest:
Each student
will be given a pretest to determine his or her ability to read, spell, the level of vocabulary and comprehension in Reading.
Post-test:
The post-test will determine measured improvement in Reading and Spelling. Their test results will be evidence of the student's growth. |
